A pinwheel plan identifies a new residential tower complex with retail podium in Chengdu, China. The pinwheel faces are positioned to maximize views to the surrounding city. Several iterations were completed to analyze how subdividing the main tower masses into a series of smaller components can better integrate apertures for light and views into the tower’s core and corridors. This subdivision also supports a smaller-scale, residential feel within and around the complex.
Primary project contributions included constructing the physical site model, crafting several preliminary physical tower iterations, diagramming these iterations digitally, and finalizing the digital site model. Site model has been crafted from museum board utilizing a combination of hand-cutting, laser-cutting, and folding techniques. Additionally, preliminary physical tower iterations were analyzed and interchanged in site model to develop design scheme.
